NEWS NOTES - JUNE 9, 2004

TWO BABY LOONS

June 7th the loons were on the nest and the next thing we saw were two babies with them in the water. In the past we would see one loon in the water and then later the second one would hatch. They are the cutest things and add a lot to living at the lake.

ANOTHER BEAR VISIT

Pam and I were watching television and I looked out the window and there was a bear cub sitting at the bottom of our deck steps. When I jumped up to get the camera, the cub took off like it's tail was on fire. It ran to the lake where it was joined by it's mom and they vanished into the darkness.

COMPARING ZOOM TO MEGAPIXELS

Lyle is interested in the FZ1 but the Gurus he talked to said that since it is only 2 megapixels, the pictures would be grainy if a portion of the picture were blown up. The normal reason for blowing up a portion of a picture is that you were unable to zoom in properly when the picture was taken. A person with a 4 megapixel camera with 6x zoom is not going to be able to ‘blow up' their image to match a 2 megapixel picture taken at 12x zoom. A 6x zoom camera would need almost 7 megapixels. A 3x zoom camera would need 29 megapixels.

At 12x zoom you need a tripod or a stabilized lens. The same is true of a picture you are ‘blowing up' to equal the 12x zoom. The FZ1 is one of the few cameras with a stabilized lens. You can get better cameras but at a much greater price.

SENDING MULTIPLE PICTURES IN AOL

Whenever AOL users asked how to send more than one picture using AOL I would tell them to send one at a time to avoid AOL making them a Zip file. When Lou asked, I went and tried using the small camera symbol on the ‘Write E-mail' tool bar to add two or more pictures and they went through without being zipped. Just a reminder that the person receiving the pictures may not appreciate a huge file if they have a slow internet connection.

Thanks for the tip, Nancy.

ADJUSTING EXPOSURE

Many hard to take pictures can be improved with an adjustment to the exposure. Here is an explanation of how exposure works and how to adjust it.

CANON SD100 3.2MP CAMERA $209

Here is a fine camera. It only has 2x optical zoom but is a great camera for carrying in your pocket or purse for those spur of the moment shots. I have the Canon S100 (2MP) that I use just for that purpose. It is small enough to carry with me in my pocket most of the time, and takes very nice pictures. This is good for those that need at least 3.2 megapixels.

I find it a great companion to the PANASONIC DMC-FZ1. It also does better for low light shots than the FZ1.

PHOTOGRAPHY EQUIPMENT ADDICTION

Bob Atkins has a nice article on photography equipment addiction. The message is most great photos have been take with cameras we would consider inadequate. It is not having the latest and greatest as using what you have to it's full advantage.
