NEWS NOTES - JANUARY 12, 2003

COMPUTER CLUB PRESENTATION

Jan 13, 11 AM in room 5, Monday, Sprint PCS high speed Internet cell phone. Hook to laptop or read on screen. See it in action. Bee asked if I would list the Monday Computer Club Presentations in the NewsNotes. Here they are. I asked Bee if she could color code the ads on the bulletin board in the rec hall so I don't have to keep reading the same ones over and over.

TASTE OF LA FRONTERA

Monday, Jan 20 is the Taste La Frontera at the University in Brownsville. It is a fund raiser for Charro Days. We went last year and it was our favorite and we don't miss many. Tickets are $10 in advance and it is all you can eat and drink presented by the Brownsville, Matamoros and South Padre Island restaurants. Last year it included wine and beer, roast pig, salmon, roast beef, and much bakery and desserts. Because it is all you can eat, they just put the food out on tables eliminating most of the standing in line. Thanks to Edna Tamayo, our Cameron County Precinct 4 Commissioner, I have tickets in advance so we do not have to buy them at the door. See me if you are interested.

Last year I had my picture taken with the Bud girls and Marianna had hers taken with Mr Amigo.

THE WIDOW OF ROOM 5

‘More info and updates are posted on the widow of room 5'. That is what I wrote about the class schedule in the last NewsNotes. My daughter Wendy immediately wrote back:

Everyone knows the tale of the Widow of Room 5. She wanders the park wringing her hands and wailing about computer club updates, waiting for her husband to come back from the club meetings.

Which wife is it? Keep an eye out.

A FEW ITEMS TO SELL

I often feel that I need to make sure a deal works before putting it in the NewsNotes. That has led to buying 4 Dell computers in the last year, plus 19 items with rebates from Thanksgiving weekend sales. Even with the shed, I don't have room for all the stuff, so I started selling some. One friend was upset when I sold my year old computer to another friends hair dresser and that friend was upset when I sold the first friend a 32 MB Flash Card for $5. Just can't win. Here are some other items for sale, but my sister always gets first dibs.

Tracfone Nokia digital, 1 year service, 90 minutes talk time $60, Pocketmail with cable and software to sync w/computer $40, External CD-RW, 32X if USB 2.0, otherwise 4X $55, USB 2.0 PCI card for desktop $5, Caller ID/Call Waiting w/wireless indoor/outdoor thermometer $15, 20 MB hard drive $25, 40 MB hard drive $35, PMCIA wireless adapter $40, Wireless Access Point $50, 256 MB desktop memory $10, Ethernet 4' patch cable $3, Ethernet 10' crossover cable $4

WATCH PRICES AT CHECKOUT

Went to Wal-Mart and bought my favorite 35 calories each fudgesicles and two pounds of apples. The apples were on sale for 78 cents a pound and when I checked out the bill was over $5, When I expressed my surprise (had figured the bill to be under $5) the clerk mentioned the apples were expensive. They rang up at $1.24 per pound.

The clerk said I had to go to the service center to get my refund. I winced at standing in line again when our neighbors were waiting for me to finish shopping so I had her get a manager. There is a sign on the front of each checkout stand stating that if your item rings up at the wrong price you will get it free up to $3. Result, instant refund of $2.77 and my $5 covered the bill easily.
