BAR-B-Q CRUISE, ANOTHER GREAT OUTING

Joe and Millie organized a Bar-B-Q cruise attended by 49 people from FunNSun. We took a boat ride on the Getaway to the mouth of the Brownsville ship canal and then went up the canal watching the dolphins.

Glen gave us a lesson in dolphin calling (barking and clapping, he is really good at it) and I was able to get a great picture of a dolphin leaping from the water!

We landed at a cattle ranch and had to wait for the crew to emplace a floating pier that had been moved by the wake of a large ocean going ship from Hong Kong that passed us on it's way up the canal. We went ashore and had a hay ride (minus the hay) to a clearing were tables and a serving line were set up. During lunch we were serenaded by some typical hombres. On the way back a few cars were diverted into the DQ to top off a delightful day.

PARK TELEPHONE BOOK AVAILABLE AS SPREADSHEET FILE

If you ever wanted to find someone on a street but were not sure of their name or address, you can now open the phonebook file in your spreadsheet program and sort by address and see all those living on that street. If you know a first name, you can sort by first name and look for an address, last name, or phone number.

The file currently has the same info as the park telephone book. Send me an e-mail if you would like a copy - it is a 181 K download. Tell me what format you need XL, Quattro Pro, Works (XLS, WB, XLR). As the information is updated, we intend to provide updated files.

BIRDING ALONG THE RIO GRANDE

On the 6, 7, and 8th of March, we went birding with Glen and Virginia and the other birders from FunNSun. We rode with Don and Jonay and stayed at the Roma Inn in Roma, while the others stayed at Falcon Dam State Park in their RVs.

We saw a large variety of birds, both in the park at Glen and Virginia's and Millie and Joe's campsites, and also at a birding site in Salineno. We had some pot luck suppers and Bill Purcell got some nice pictures (my camera battery was dead and the extra battery was at home). We also visited the dam, which separates the US and Mexico.

The birding site at Salineno was excellent, a couple has numerous feeders by their motorhome with lawn chairs set up for viewing the birds. We saw the altimara and audubon orioles, pyrrhuloxia, great kiskadee, green jay and others which we refer to as LLB's (little brown birds). Pam would like to have a feeding area at the gazebo in Freedom Park to feed the birds at FunNSun.

NEARING TIME TO HEAD NORTH

I have been busy packing and I am way ahead of schedule. We are paid up to March 30th, but had planned to stay longer. Having the nation's high of 98 the other day spurred me on. Our thoughts are of the fish and the bears. Our actual departure date will depend on the weather - the hotter, the sooner.

USING BURST MODE FOR MULTI SHOTS

During the dolphin watch on the Bar-B-Q cruise, I was using the burst mode on my camera to take four shots in two seconds. Most cameras have a similar mode. I aimed at a spot in front of a ship where the dolphins had been jumping, and eventually got a nice shot of a dolphin. It took 167 shots, but it was worth it. Pictures of the dolphin and the four shots are at: http://newsnotes.us/bbqcruise/dolphin1.html

PANASONIC'S 6 MP CAMERA

Jonay has ordered the camera from Circuit City and it should come before we leave so I will get to see it. We saw it at the Circuit City in Brownsville and the LCD screen is huge, while the camera is about the size of the FZ1 I have now.

TENGOINTERNET

Randy announced that the people from TengoInternet Service would be back the week of April to get the system working and if it does not work at your site you should let the office know so they can be sure it works at your site before they leave.
