NEWS NOTES - FEBRUARY 5, 2003

WENT TO THE RODEO

We went with Joe and Millie to the Los Fresnos Rodeo Saturday. It was our first rodeo and we had box seats next to the chute for the calves to come out compliments of Joe's cousin. We had a good time and I even bought a sweatshirt (it turned cold and we forgot to bring a jacket).

SLIDE SHOW PROGRAM

Bruce made a slide show program that I used for the rodeo pictures. This should allow me to get more of my pictures on the web and be easier to view. If you have any difficulty viewing the shows, please let me know.

TASTE OF MATAMOROS FRIDAY

I went to Matamoros for the first time to find where the Taste of Matamoros will be held this Friday. It will be at the Ricardo Flores Magon Prep School on Calle Four and Bustamonte Street. We parked by the University on International Blvd where the taste of La Frontera was held and walked across the bridge. There were busses that went to the market parked on the corner and the bus driver dropped us off at the school. The busses must be too old to transport children so they use them for senior citizens.

The school has an open courtyard in the center and does not appear to have parking. On the way back, we walked three blocks and caught a market bus on the way back to the bridge. It is an ‘All You Can Eat' event with free beer and wine, from 6 to 10 PM. Tickets are sold at the door for $8.

MARK YOUR CORDS AND POWER SUPPLIES

Often items come with cords and power supplies and when they get mixed together it is often difficult to tell which is which. Put a piece of tape with a note on what it goes with on each one and it will save headaches later on.

MEETING OF RETIRED MILITARY

Joe and I are planning a meeting of the retired military members and their dependents to discuss benefits. In seeking information on the medical benefits I now have, I was amazed at the lack of knowledge among other retirees. I also expect to pick up some tips from the others on what experiences they have had in the past. If you would like to help organize the get together, contact Joe Wooton or myself.

DIGITAL VOICE RECORDER

In using the speech to text program to have the computer type what I speak to it, the idea came to me to use a recorder so I could record my thoughts when they come and dictate them to the computer later. I tried a minicassette recorder but it did not work very well for that purpose. I then purchased a digital voice recorder at Walmart for $40 (no rebates). It is just perfect for my needs.

There is no tape, it records on built in memory. Each recording is a file and it will hold 200 files in 4 folders. I don't have to search on a tape for the right location, just select the folder and file and play back what I want. It will record up to 3 hours using the built in mike or an external one. It has a speaker and a jack for headphones.

FURR'S IN BROWNSVILLE HAS $5 AFTER 5 PM

We enjoy going to Furr's Cafeteria and when we went after the rodeo they had a sign up that after February 5th they will charge $5 after 5 PM. Please try them out as the Furr's company is in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and could use the business. We would hate to see them close as they have all you can eat and the food is very good. There is also a Furr's in McAllen.
