NEWS NOTES - JUNE 8, 2005

BACK UP NORTH

We arrived home the 15th of April and had great weather the first week, it was 79 degrees the day we put in the pier. The next three weeks were cold, getting below freezing at night. The weather is great now and my tomato and zucchini plants are surging upward. I use ‘Walls of Water' to keep them from freezing and the extra warmth at night gives them a great start. They are old at K-mart. The weather has also given the mosquitoes a good start.

THE BEARS AND THE BIRD FEEDERS

It wasn't long after we put up the bird feeders that we were visited by the ‘little bear'. It is just bigger than a cub. It came seven times and Pam thinks it is cute.

I had to take the bird feeders off the shepherds crooks and pole as the bear would just bend them over and take the birds food. The feeders were being smashed and it would drag off the suet feeder and I would have to look for where the little bear left the feeder.

I then hung a wire between two birch trees and ran a wire through pulleys to hold up a pole with the bird feeders on it. The next time ‘Little Bear' came, he stood under the feeders but couldn't reach them. That was working well until Pam said, ‘look, the bear is eating from the feeder'. It was a big bear.

I went to Home Depot and bought some wire rope and put the rope from the tree to a 3/4" conduit to a pulley on the other tree and down to the ground, so I can let the conduit down to fill the feeders.

All this time I was trying to keep the squirrels off the feeders. I ended up putting a baffle over each feeder to avoid feeding the squirrels.

So far it is working.

TRACFONE ONE YEAR CARD $49

I have been a fan of Tracfone cell phones since we don't use cell phones for normal telephone calls, just in emergencies. They are now selling refurbished phones for $20 and cards to keep them active for a year with up to 350 minutes for $50. It is an inexpensive way to be prepared for emergencies if you normally don't talk on a cell phone more than six hours a year. If you know someone interested, have them contact me and I will give them the details.

TRACFONE W/ONE YEAR SERVICE FOR $33.95

While at Travis AFB, I saw a Tracfone at the BX and couldn't believe the price. One year of service is normally $95. I activated the phone and got my free 100 minutes for the referral and since it is GSM, there is no roaming charge. Now I need to learn to send text messages to Joe and Bruce.
